HUNTLY bowed out of the Aberdeenshire Cup on Wednesday night with a 3-0 defeat to Cove Rangers.

Nicholas Gray (2) and Paul McManus were on target as the Aberdeen side booked a quarter-final meeting with Keith.

There were chances at either end in the opening minutes; Ryan Strachan forced John Farquhar into a save with a low drive while Glenn Murison shot wide following a Huntly break upfield two minutes later.

Cove broke the deadlock in the seventh minute when a Sam Robertson cross from the right was met by Gray who got in front of his marker to head home.

A Murison drive through a packed penalty are took a deflection wide before the half-hour mark while Gray came close again for Cove only to be blocked by Michael Clark on the edge of the Huntly box.

The woodwork denied Cove a second when Strachan’s attempt clipped the bar with a minute of the half remaining.

Huntly started the second half looking to grab a quick leveller with Cove keeper Stuart McKenzie getting down low to keep out a Ross Still drive.

In the 53rd minute, Gray got the better of Huntly’s defence before slotting past Farquhar. McManus made it three getting in behind his marker before powering in a low shot.

Huntly came close to reducing the deficit when David Donald’s powerful attempt kept out at the near post by a fine stop from Stuart McKenzie.
