HIGHLAND League champions Buckie Thistle began the defence of their title with a narrow 1-0 win at home to Clach.
A first half goal from the prolific John McLeod (pictured) secured the points, but Clach missed a second half penalty when Ian Penwright smashed his effort against the bar.
The Jags had goalkeeper Daniel Bell to thank when he made a great save to deny Liam Shewan in the last minute of normal time.
Buckie boss Graeme Stewart said: "It was tough. Clach probably deserved something from the game."
Elsewhere on the opening day, Turriff Utd edged out derby rivals Deveronvale 4-3 at Princess Royal Park. Scott Miller bagged a hat-trick for the visitors on his competitive debut.
