THE 24-year-old man who died on Friday on the Rothes to Mosstodloch road has been named as Iain McKenzie from Keith.
The crash happened on the B9015 near Station Cottage, Orton, at about 4.45pm on Friday.
A 27-year-old man, who was a passenger in the same black Subaru Forester, suffered serious injuries and is currently in a critical condition at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
A 36-year-man who was driving a gold VW Golf, which was the other vehicle involved, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
His passenger, a 45-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and is being treated at Dr Gray’s in Elgin.
One of the cars hit a tree, while the other crashed into an electricity pole, causing power cables to fall onto the railway track.
Tributes have been paid online to Mr McKenzie.
Widely known as ‘Jock’, he was a motor-cross fan who regularly competed at the race track at Rhynie.
Sergeant Scott Deans of the Road Policing Department said: "Our thoughts at this sad time are with the families of those involved in this collision.
"We have spoken to several witnesses but would still like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or who saw either vehicle from about 4.30pm onwards.
