RICHARD Lochhead has responded to the defeat of the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal in the House of Commons last night.
Moray's MSP said: “The Prime Minister suffered a defeat of historic proportions over her Brexit deal and we’re now at a point where Westminster simply cannot continue to kick the can further down the road.
“For the last two and half years Westminster has been in utter chaos – something which many leave voters in Moray have told me they didn’t vote for.
"This defeat has been on the cards for months and instead of facing up to that the Prime Minister wasted valuable time by postponing the meaningful vote in December.
“Quite simply the UK Government has run out of time and May now needs to act urgently to stop the clock on the Article 50 process – this is the only way to avoid crashing out of the EU at the end of March without a deal, which would be absolutely disastrous for Moray.
"And given the inability of Westminster to agree a way forward we then need to put this issue back to the people in another referendum, as we’ve come to a complete dead end and I don’t see any other way out.
“Moray’s MP also needs to take a step back from his position that he’s willing to leave the EU without a deal given the damage this would cause families and businesses in his constituency.
"EU nationals living and working in Moray, our international businesses and our young people in particular will suffer from a hard Brexit or no deal scenario that Mr Ross appears to be supporting.
"And every family’s living standards will nosedive as a result of the UK Government’s incompetent and shambolic handling of Brexit by leaving the EU, losing freedom of movement of people, goods and services and leaving the Single Market.”
