IT HAS now been confirmed that one man, aged 47, has been charged in connection with the assault on Banff grandfather Alex Sutherland.
Enquiries are ongoing and police are following a positive line of enquiry and anyone with information is urged to contact them on 101.
The assault took place in the early hours of Monday, March 13.
Officers received a report of an incident in the North Castle Street/Stuart Lane area at around 12.45am. Mr Sutherland (59) was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he was treated for a head injury.
PC Craig Milne, who is leading the investigation, said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time in question and saw anything that could assist with our inquiries to get in touch as soon as possible.
"In particular I would appeal to any taxi drivers, motorists or locals who may have been making their way home and saw a group of four or five men to let us know. We understand some of these men may have been wearing hooded tops and also believe they may have been using a black or dark-coloured car, possibly an Audi.
"Incidents of this nature are extremely rare in the area, and I can assure the public it is being taken extremely seriously."
