In this eagerly-anticipated replay at Victoria Park in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 fans, the Banff side took the initiative from the outset and won 3-1 after the game went to extra time. Buckie were forced into a couple of changes to their line-up from the previous weekend with Neil Davidson unavailable and Charlie Brown injured. Jamie Shewan and Ian Murray were the replacements for Gregg Carrol's starting XI, while Robbie Brown was suspended for the reds and Graeme Rodger took his place in Vale's midfield. The visitors, kicking up the slope for the opening 45 were soon in control and Robbie Duncanson found the target early on although Kevin Main saved the striker's header comfortably. Rodger fired straight at Main after eight minutes, while Scott Fraser was only denied the opener when his well-struck effort was blocked to safety by Lewis Mackinnon. A tight angle saw Duncanson through one-on-one with Main but the keeper saved at his near post at the expense of a corner kick. The resultant flag-kick however was well utilised by the visitors when they grabbed the lead. McGowan swung the ball in and Mark Chisholm rose to head goalwards. Main stopped the ball low down on his goal-line, but Mike McKenzie was in the right place to stab home the loose ball. McKenzie hobbled out of the tie before his former strike partner Ian Murray was ordered off for a dangerous challenge on Vale's James Blanchard, the keeper requiring treatment to his face before play was re-started. Craig Macmillan's ambitious effort from distance summed up Buckie's opening 30 minutes, although they did come close to equalising when Zander Sutherland's cross eluded the Vale defence, allowing Jamie Shewan to turn and fire across the face of Blanchard's goal, the ball just eluding the far post as it ran out of play. A huge mistake by referee Steven Allen midway through the second half had the Viccy in an uproar when Gary McGowan latched on to a bungled Mackinnon pass-back and rounded Main before the keeper pulled the striker's legs from under him, just as he looked certain to make it 2-0.
As the ref pointed to the spot and pulled out a card it was thought he was going to send off Main for denying a scoring opportunity but, to everyone's amazement, he booked McGowan for simulation and awarded a free kick to the home side. Robert Duncan was red-carded soon after for going over the ball, also in a challenge with McGowan, and this seemed to stimulate the home side. A great run by sub Paul Napier down the right saw the ball reach former Inverness winger Zander Sutherland on the opposite flank and he picked out the run of Stephen Bruce, who simply thumped the ball low past Blanchard from the edge of the 18-yard box. Steve Dolan curled a deft free kick wide before an excellent piece of trickery from Sutherland saw the winger cut inside Derek Milne and smash an effort off the face of the bar from 18-yards. As the game swung from end to end, substitute Stephen Gauld dribbled his way into the Jags' box, only to see Main pull off a fine stop to deny him his moment of glory and Main did likewise moments later to thwart Mark Smith. Into the second period of extra time and a patient move down the left side saw sub Magnus Barclay do well to skip beyond Angus and feed McGowan and the winger-cum-striker finished off the move with a precise strike into the bottom corner. Mark Smith made absolutely sure of Vale's passage into round three when he planted the ball in the top corner from the edge of the box in the dying minutes. Deveronvale: Blanchard, Milne, Dolan, Chisholm, Fraser, Rodger (Barclay 87), McGowan, Urquhart, Duncanson (Gauld 106), McKenzie (Cowie 22), Smith. |
