A NEW photograph exhibition on old Portsoy is on show this week, upstairs in the Salmon Bothy.

Around 600 photos of the town and the surrounding area have been collected in little over three months, much to the surprise of the volunteers, who have to scan, index and research them.

It was the success of the project which inspired the group to put on a second week long display, starting at the weekend and running until Sunday.

Many of the 200 or so photos on display this time were not part of that original photo fest display over the May Day weekend, which drew big crowds.

Two computers project an ever-changing slide show of images, and there are large blown-up prints adorning the walls.

Street scenes, crowds, events, old shops, traction engines, railways, and boats are all included, and have led to pleasant reminiscences for visitors to the bothy.

They date from the late 1800s right up until the 1970s.

Among them are postcards printed and published from the Calder Printworks, formerly in Church Street.

All the photos have been lent for copying following an appeal by the bothy owners, the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival group.

A window into Portsoy's past for Portsoy salmon bothy manager Leanne Wilson (right) and two volunteers in the photo project, George Clark and Anne McArthur.

They are scanned into a computer and returned to the owners.

Volunteer Anne McArthur explained: "We wanted a community project which would bring folk in, and let them find out what facilities we have here in the bothy.

"This extra week now gives more folk a chance to see them."

For bothy manager Leanne Wilson, there was one photo of special interest to her: an old photo of Davidsons the draper, which was owned by her great grandfather. The shop was between what is now the Co-op storeroom, and Donald the Baker.

The project is keen to collect more photos for scanning for the collection, and for more volunteers to help with organising, indexing and captioning them.

Contact Leanne Wilson at the Salmon Bothy, on Links Road, near the caravan site 01261 842951.

The exhibition is open every afternoon from 2-4pm until this Sunday (closed today, Tuesday).
