TURRIFF United got a much-needed win on Saturday with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Fort William at The Haughs.

Three goals in the space of five minutes late in the game saw them secure the points.

Grant Pennet and Michael Taylor returned to the Turriff squad, while Fort William had a much altered team.

Fort William were the first to threaten, with Logan Barker escaping the clutches of Andy Hutchison, but he fired his shot over the bar from 16 yards.

However, it was Turriff who took the lead on the 15th minute when Ryan Cowie's precise ball found Michael Taylor and he struck his shot across into the far corner of the net.

Fort William keeper Stewart Gray then made a terrific save to prevent James Chalmers from grabbing his first of the season.

It proved to be simply a delay as Turriff then netted from a corner. Cowie and Taylor linked up again with the latter heading home for his second goal.

Turriff threatened from the start of the second half with Taylor passing up a couple of opportunities to complete his hat-trick

Fort William very nearly reduced the deficit to one when Andy Martin connected with a long-range free kick, but Pennet was there to make the save.

Turriff then made a triple substitution which saw Dave McKenzie, Jerry O'Driscoll and Gary Harris come on.

The change of tactics paid off when a corner reached Harris and his shot found its way into the net, although O'Driscoll claimed he got the final touch of the ball.

There was no doubt about the scorer of the next when Donald Fraser's cross from the right found Harris which struck his knee and looped over Gray into the far corner.

O'Driscoll made it three in five minutes when he received the ball from Harris and his shot found the top corner from 18 yards.

Afterwards, Turriff manager Mark Simpson said: "I was pretty pleased with the way the first half went, but we should have taken more of our chances.

"It was another clean sheet and that without the experience of Dave McKenzie, Jerry and myself in the starting line-up.

"We now go into a busy spell of games."

This week Turriff travel to Formartine tomorrow (Wednesday) night in the Aberdeenshire Cup and are on the road again on Saturday when they face Fraserburgh.
