OLYMPIC torch-bearer Angie Shearer, a PE teacher at Banff Academy, is set to chalk up another charity fund-raising milestone next month as the organiser of Cancer Research UK’s Relay for Life event which takes place in Peterhead’s Catto Park on Saturday, July 7.
Selected to carry the Olympic torch on the Aberdeenshire leg of its UK tour earlier this month on the strength of her impressive fund-raising record, Angie is the driving force behind the annual Relay for Life event in Peterhead, which has raised more than £500,000 in the 11 years since its inception in 2000.
The 27-year-old took her replica Olympic torch along to Banff Academy’s sports day last week, and many pupils took the opportunity to have their photograph taken with it, but over the next couple of weeks her focus will be on Cancer Research UK’s local event.
“I got involved in Cancer Research UK’s fund-raising activities after my grandmother died when I was 15,” said Angie.
“When I was 16, I took part in the relay for the first time and I’ve been involved with it since, chairing the organising committee for the past eight years.Read the full story in your Banffshire Journal, on sale now.
