Portsoy football - On Saturday a match in the first round of the Aberdeenshire Cup was played at Sutherland Park between the Strathlene United and Portsoy Thistle. At the start the Strathlene players, having the wind in their favour, pushed pretty hard for a short time, but failed to score a goal. The Portsoy team then commenced scoring and kept at it until the result at the close of play was six goals in favour of Portsoy against none for Strathlene. The visitors played a plucky game but could make nothing of their opponents. The game was followed with keen interest and the result was enthusiastically cheered by a large crowd of spectators.

Sandend public eyesore - Villagers in Sandend are up in arms over the state of the public toilets in the village. Some time ago vandals smashed most of the windows in the building but the residents were assured that repairs would be undertaken as a matter of urgency. But, so far, nothing has been done and the appearance of the toilets was slammed by the judges in the "Scotland in Bloom" competition when they visited the village earlier this year. When the matter was brought to the attention of Fordyce, Sandend and District Community Council it was agreed that a letter be sent to the district council asking that the work be undertaken as soon as possible. The district council are also to be asked to provide additional litter bins at Sandend.
Straw up in smoke - More than 100 bales of straw were destroyed in a fire on a farm near Banff on Wednesday evening. More than 50 firemen from Banff, Macduff, Aberchirder and Turriff fought for more than an hour to bring the blaze at a Dutch barn at Mill of Alvah under control. The farm is one of a number worked by J. A. Davidson and Sons, Culbeuchly, Banff. The fire could be seen for miles around and firemen remained at the scene for some time to dampen down the smouldering straw. A combine harvester and a tractor in an adjoining shed were also destroyed in the incident.
